Transforming Norfolk One Tree at a Time
Bringing Green Spaces and Opportunity to Norfolk’s Underserved Communities
About the Project
Why A Greener Hampton Roads?
A Hampton Roads Blue Green Oasis is a transformative community initiative led by Norfolk State University”s College of Liberal Arts and supported by the USDA Forest Service.
Our mission is to bring the benefits of urban forestry—cooler neighborhoods, cleaner air, and more vibrant green spaces—to some of Norfolk’s most disadvantaged communities.
By addressing long-standing environmental inequities, we aim to improve quality of life, reduce heat island effects, and create lasting economic and educational opportunities for local residents.
Together, we are planting trees and planting hope—for a healthier, greener, and more just Hampton Roads.
Impact & Community Benefits
🌳 Cooler Neighborhoods
Tree canopy coverage helps lower ground temperatures by providing shade and reducing the urban heat island effect.
By planting trees in historically underserved areas, we’re making streets and homes cooler and more livable—especially during the hottest months of the year.
💨 Improved Air Quality
Trees act as natural air filters. They absorb pollutants like carbon dioxide, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide while releasing clean oxygen.
This project contributes to healthier lungs and fewer respiratory issues, especially in communities where conditions like asthma are more prevalent.
🌿 Greener, Healthier Spaces
Access to green spaces has been proven to reduce stress, improve mental health, and encourage physical activity. This project will transform vacant lots and neglected streets into lush, welcoming environments where families and neighbors can gather and thrive.
